Kunnakudi Murugan Temple

Karaikudi is surrounded by amazing temples and historic palaces. Close to Karaikudi is Kunnakudi. The small village is known for its very old cave temples. Situated in a rock that is 200ft above ground level is Kunnakudi Murugan Temple. Towards the cave's western side, you will see three small shrines. These shrines are located adjacent to each other. The Murugan Temple is the presiding deity of Shanmuganathan alias Murugan. The temple has a history called the Mayuragiri Puranam.

Festivals in the Murugan Temple

In the month of January, Thaipusam is celebrated in a grand manner. Then in March, the temple celebrates Panguni Uthram. The month of November is famous for Thirukarthikai and Kandha Shasti. Individuals flock from different parts of the country to experience the splendor in these festivals.

Architectural significance of the Murugan Temple

The Temple is 40 metere tall. It has a 16.15 m Rajagopuram. The Temple's first two shrines are finely sculptured with Dwarapalas. The historic place has many old inscriptions. Towards the southern regions of the Murugan Temple, you will find an idol of Chandikeswara. The idol has a yoga pose. The idol is placed in the first cave. To the right of this idol, you will find a Parasu. The first cave looks and feels like a Pallava cave, with a rockcut "Shivalinga" in the middle. On the way to the main Murugan Temple, you will see three mini - temples. Two of these temples are for Lord Ganesha and one for Lord Kadamba.

Tourists consider the Murugan Temple as a calm and nice place. The Temple is currently managed by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI). Unlike many other Murugan Temples, this historical site is not crowded. Thus, no one would push you or force you to complete "quick" worship sessions. Also, the temple has a very old elephant, which is well trained to keep its huge trunk on the head's of people who give money. Surrounded by a village, the locals lead a peaceful life. The Murugan Temple is for everyone, who follows and loves Lord Muruga. A unique feature of this temple is that Lord Muruga, Lordess Valli and Lordess Deivaanai are seated on a their "historical" vaahanam "The Peacock". This is a very rare formation, seen in very few temples.

The temple has a special pooja called the "Shanmuga Archana". This is a special praise and worship sessions for Lord Muruga. The archana costs an affordable price of Rs. 2000. The materials required for this pooja is provided by the temple itself. Visitors are not expected to bring any pooja materials. Devotees who offer salt and pepper will be cured from various skin diseases.
