About Chetttinad Palace
If you are in Karaikudi, you should visit its Chittinad Palaces. The Chettinad Palace was designed and constructed by Dr. Annamalai Chettiyar about 100 years back and is now the oldest surviving palace. Dr. Annamalai Chettiyar was the founder of the Indian Bank and Annamalai University. History states that, most of the construction materials and furnishings used in the Palace were imported from East Asian countries and Europe. The Palace has an amazing look with granite pillars, teak wood carvings and huge sculptures. The huge lobbies, rooms, halls and verandahs will rejuvenate new life into your desire for architectural beauty. Even today, Kanadukathan Chettinad Palace is a classic example of Chettinad architecture. The construction which started in 1902 took ten years to complete. It is huge and it covers a floor area of 40,000 square feet.
Architectural Significance of Chettinad Palace
The verandah was converted into the waiting area for the visitors, the flooring of which is done with white marble. The meeting hall has pairs of tusks while the ceiling has artistic patterns in vegetable dye. The rooms were cool because of the depth of the walls which were 1.5 ft to 3 ft wide. Instead of cementing agent, the bricks are bound together with egg white paste. Rani Seethai Achi, wife of Dr Annamalai Chettiyar, spent most of her time in the pooja room. There is also a dining room for private dinners and a rosewood table which was extendable. The room is decorated with photographs and paintings of the British days.
